We've got a rubber match between the 1-1 Chicago White Sox and the 1-1 Detroit Tigers today at 1:10 p.m. EST.

After a 5-4 loss to open the season, Chicago rebounded with a 5-2 win yesterday behind a strong performance from Dylan Cease.

Today, the White Sox will send Michael Kopech to the mound. The reliever-turned-starter struggled in spring training, culminating in a final outing against San Diego in which he threw six consecutive balls to open the first inning. Chicago has high hopes for him though and hopes he can keep an improved Detroit offense down.

The Tigers will counter with Tarik Skubal, who set a franchise rookie record with 164 strikeouts last year. He's got electric stuff, but he did give up 35 home runs, so he can be hit hard.

Can the young arm give Detroit a series win to open the season or will the White Sox stake their claim to the division early on?

White Sox vs Tigers Prediction and Pick

Happy Skubal day! I've got high hopes for the 25-year old out of Seattle University. Over his final 44 innings last year, he only surrendered 19 runs. 11 of those came from two disastrous outings, and if you remove those he gave up eight runs over his last 36 innings. That'll play, and he picked up right up where he left off with a fantastic spring training.

Skubal threw 13.2 innings while only giving up two runs in the spring, and I'll be targeting him early and often this season.

Kopech, on the other hand, looks rusty and I have questions about how deep he'll go in this one. Chicago used nine relievers over the first two games, so its bullpen will be gassed. If Kopech can't last but more than a couple of innings, the White Sox will be hard-pressed to keep the Tigers' bats down for long.

Early in the year, I target young pitchers that I expect to make a jump this season in hopes of beating the market. You'll find that common theme throughout a ton of my early previews, and I encourage you to find a few pitchers you like to improve this season as well. It's an excellent way to find value at the beginning of the MLB season.

I'll happily take the Tigers at plus money with Skubal on the mound against a pitcher I have limited faith in. Detroit improves to 2-1 today.

Pick: Tigers +115
