If only the U.S. Open were a no-cut, then Phil Mickelson would feel right at home.

Instead, the newly-turned heel of the golf world is literally headed home; missing the cut by several projected strokes at the 2022 U.S. Open from The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.

Lefty shot an 8-over 78 on Round 1 Thursday to kick off his return back amongst the best on the PGA Tour. That put him in a tie for 148th after day one out of 155 golfers in the field. He performed better on Friday, but still shot 3-over 73 to put him back to +11 for the tournament, and eliminated from contention.

Lucky for Mickelson, several other notable names on tour also had their share of struggles throughout the last two days. Tommy Fleetwood is out after shooting +7, as is Viktor Hovland. The young Norwegian had a miserable Day 2 after shooting even par on Thursday; hitting seven bogeys on the back nine to fall to +7 for the tournament.

Tony Finau is out much earlier than expected. After being tied for the lead on Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open with Rory McIlroy, Finau never put it all together; shooting 5-over par with a 73 and 72 on Friday.

Louis Oosthuizen also is headed home after finishing in the top 10 the last three years, and the top 3 the last two U.S. Opens.

Perhaps the most surprising name on the list for outside golfers looking in is Shane Lowry.

The Irishman had entered the U.S. Open without missing a cut in 2022, including four top 10 finishes in his last nine PGA Tournaments excluding the WGC Match Play back at the end of March. Lowry was one of Iain MacMillan's top matchup bets against Collin Morikawa, but Lowry shot 2-over par both days of the tournament as he's expected to head home.

What is the U.S. Open Cut Line?

The projected cut line is currently posted at 3-over par, or +3 according to the latest projections at PGATour.com. Those scoring +3 or lower will play into Saturday and Sunday's tournament. Anything at +4 or above is eliminated from contention.

LIV Tour Participants Getting Crushed at the U.S. Open

Mickelson wasn't the only notable name from the LIV Golf Tour that's sitting on or past the cut line.

Several of the newly formed Saudi Tour's big names are in danger of elimination, including Sergio Garcia, Talor Gooch, Kevin Na, and the aforementioned Ooshuizen.

It's worth pointing out that three of the LIV Golf's most talented names in Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau remain in the field, but nowhere near the top of the leaderboard.

DJ (T29) struggled on Day 2 with a 3-over 73 to put him at +1 for the U.S. Open. Reed is also 1-over par with a 71 on Friday following an even par round on Thursday. DeChambeau shot 1-over par both days at Brookline, and will head into the weekend tied for 42nd at 2-over par.
