Why Are Texans Insistent on Starting Tyrod Taylor Over Davis Mills?

The Houston Texans aren’t going anywhere this season.

WynnBET has Houston projected to win just 3.5 games this season with the under (-130) favored even though the team won its season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It’s not a surprise, as the Texans blew a lead against the New England Patriots in Week 5 to fall to 1-4 on the season. However, Houston also received a pleasant surprise because third-round rookie quarterback Davis Mills played the best game of his young career, throwing for 311 yards and three touchdowns.

Mills has also struggled mightily at points this year, especially in the team’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, but that’s expected by a rookie quarterback. Since Houston has no intention of playing Deshaun Watson, who may not even be eligible to play with his pending legal issues, why not take a look at Mills this season before deciding on your quarterback of the future?

Texans head coach David Culley doesn’t see it that way, and he plans to turn back to veteran Tyrod Taylor, who played well in the first two weeks of the season. Taylor is a serviceable veteran, but he may actually do more harm for Houston and play them out of a top-three pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

“Tyrod comes back and he’s healthy, he’s our starting quarterback,” Culley said. “As far as the quarterback situation, he gives us our best chance to win. He’s our starting quarterback. He was our starting quarterback when he went down. He was doing an excellent job. When he comes back, he’ll still be our starting quarterback.”

Taylor still isn’t ready to return from a hamstring injury, but the Texans seem committed to spending a season with him under center. It’s a curious move for a team that’s going nowhere, especially if Mills continues to improve.

Houston is a 10-point underdog in Week 6 on the road against the Indianapolis Colts.
