Why Can't You Bet on the 2022 NFL Draft in New York?

The 2022 NFL Draft begins on Thursday night, and bettors everywhere are looking to get some last-minute information to place their wagers on this year's action.
That is, unless you are in New York State.
New York is not allowing bettors to place wagers on the 2022 NFL Draft, despite the fact that sports gambling has been legal in the state for several months.

Since the draft is not considered a "sporting event" that athletes are competing in, bettors are unable to wager on it in New York.
“The NFL draft does not fit into the definition of sports wagering as defined by statute,” a spokesperson for the Gaming Commission told WIVB News 4.
It's an unfortunate reality for New York sports bettors, as they are unable to wager on one of the biggest events of the NFL season. For now, New York bettors will have to focus on futures for the upcoming season while they root for the New York Jets and New York Giants to strike gold in this year's draft.
