Wild Wagering Trends CFB: Can Harbaugh Find Success Against Penn State?
By Matt De Saro
Another week and another trio of wild college football betting trends to review. This week we take a look at a major conference matchup between Michigan and Penn State with a focus on the coaching. Next, an Arizona State team who has made it a habit of covering over Washington. Finally, we talk about the most successful against the spread (ATS) in the nation and their chances at continued spread domination in Week 11.
Here are the top three betting trends for the Week 11 group of games. All odds are provided by WynnBET Sportsbook.
Michigan vs Penn State +1.0 | Over/Under 48.5
Jim Harbaugh is 3-7 ATS against Penn State
While I don’t generally blame coaches for their team’s failures, I think Jim Harbaugh at times is an exception. His play-calling has been questioned for several years now and he has been criticized for playing too carefully and not allowing his quarterbacks to stretch their legs.
This week, the Wolverines have a tough game on the road against Penn State as 1.0-point road favorites. Michigan needs to win out if they have even a chance of making the CFP but Penn State presents a real challenge. Especially on the road, the Nittany Lions are a dangerous team.
Harbaugh’s ineffectiveness against Penn State has extended past ATS rankings as Michigan has lost three of the last four games between these two teams. Before that, PSU hadn’t beaten Michigan since 2013.
Arizona State vs Washington +6.0 | Over/Under 46.0
Arizona State is on a 13 game ATS win streak against Washington
Think about this for a second. The Washington Huskies haven’t covered a football game against the Arizona State Sun Devils since George W. Bush was president. Nearly 20 years have gone by since the Sun Devils weren’t able to cover, and they are a strong ATS team on the road. In their last six games away from home, the Sun Devils are 4-2 ATS.
Meanwhile, it appears the Huskies struggle to cover against anyone and are currently mired in a 3-10 ATS slump going back to last season.
Syracuse vs Louisville -3.0 | Over/Under 55.0
The Orange are 6-1 ATS this season as an underdog
The Syracuse Orange might not be a powerhouse program, but they do lead the nation in one very important category. Syracuse enters Week 11 with a very impressive and profitable 8-1 ATS record entering this game.
That would be a strong enough trend on its own, but the Orange are also 6-1 ATS on the road and will be playing at Louisville this weekend.
Syracuse relies too heavily on their running game at times and needs to start opening up the offense if they hope to keep covering as underdogs.
Despite their 2021 ATS success, Syracuse is 0-5 ATS in their last five trips to Louisville and 1-6 ATS in their last seven games overall.
