Wild Wagering Trends for NFL Conference Championship Games
By Matt De Saro
The NFL Conference Championship games are finally upon us! This means that we only have three games left in the NFL season. While this limits our options for betting, it does give us more time to dig deep into these matchups. With that in mind, let us explore some wild betting trends for these two title games. All odds that follow were provided by WynnBET Sportsbook.
49ers vs Rams -3.5 | Over/Under 46
The 49ers are 7-3 SU all-time when Shanahan and McVay coach
This is a bit of a piggyback on an article I wrote earlier today, but it is the most interesting trend I have read about for this matchup. Basically, Sean McVay has a history of getting beaten by his former supervisor Kyle Shanahan. While the Rams under McVay are 18-4 against NFC teams not named the 49ers, they are just 3-7 against San Fran. In fact, the last time the Rams beat the Niners was in Week 17 of 2018. After winning ust 30 percent of his career games against Shanahan, McVay and the Rams are a risky bet as 3.5 point favorites on Sunday.
Bengals vs Chiefs -7 | Over/Under 54.5
The Bengals are 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games.
The Bengals made history this season by winning their first playoff game in decades. Another accomplishment that many were unaware of came last weekend when they beat the Tennesee Titans on the road. It was the Bengals' first road win in history after losing nine straight away from Cincinnati.
The win continued a strong betting trend that the Bengals have put together this season. The Bengals have failed to cover just once on the road in their last eight away games. As an underdog on the road, they are 5-1 ATS. That lone ATS loss during that time came on a fluke loss to the New York Jets. The Bengals lost by thee as 14.5 point favorites. The Bengals already covered once against the Chiefs at home and I like their chances for a repeat performance at Arrowhead.
Bonus Betting Trend
SU winners cover 92.5 percent of the time
Over the last 40 years, the winning team in the conference championship game covered 37 times. Three of those ATS losses were by the New England Patriots after 2007. This does make me second guess betting on teams in the conference title game that I expect to lose yet cover wide spreads.
