Last season with the Washington Wizards, Russell Westbrook finished the 2020-21 season with 38 triple-doubles in 65 games.

The second closest was Denver's Nikola Jokic with 16; and he won the MVP!

Now in his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers and playing alongside stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis, can Westbrook stay on this remarkable trajectory?

We'll find out tonight when he makes his season debut for L.A. against the Golden State Warriors at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Lakers are 3-point home favorites against the spread at WynnBET with a total point projection of 227.

Here is where WynnBET has Westbrook's projections listed for this evening's matchups:

  • Over/Under 19.5 Points
  • Over/Under 8.5 Rebounds
  • Over/Under 9.5 Assists

Let's break down these lines and evaluate whether Westbrook goes over or under these numbers, and ultimately determine whether bettors should expect the 32-year old to channel his inner Ice Cube and mess around and get a triple-double.

Russell Westbrook Under 19.5 Points

Season openers for the Lakers have been more low-scoring for their stars in years past. Anthony Davis has gone 25 PPG, Westbrook 25.6 PPG, and most surprising, LeBron James who has only averaged 22 PPG over the last three seasons.

While Westbrook may look to establish himself early on, I would expect him to be more a distributor in the second half of a close game, looking to the more established Lakers in LeBron and Davis.

The Warriors ranked 18th last season in points allowed, and should be an improved unit this season.

Russell Westbrook Over 8.5 Rebounds (-135)

I think this prop hits the over fairly early tonight, with Westbrook likely flying to the basket to try and get the Lakers in transition whenever he can. Because this will likely slow down in the second half when LeBron's usage rate should go up, I think Russ can get to 5-6 in the first half, and then will himself into a few rebounds afterwards.

The Lakers also had the second-best defense in the league a season ago. It won't be top 3 again this year, but the Warriors will still have plenty of missed shots leading way for Westbrook to clean up on the glass.

Russell Westbrook Under 9.5 Assists (-135)

I know I'm on the under of his numbers from a season ago here, but the Lakers play at a much slower pace than they did in Washington where they were among the league's leaders..

This is also a lack of usage rate play, as Westbrook will likely lose point guard responsibilities early on to LeBron late in the game. As the season goes on and their "Big 3" get more comfortable with each other, I anticipate Westbrook holding it down even more later this year.
