Will Zalatoris Talks Masters, Betting with Tony Romo, and His Favorite Course to Play
Will Zalatoris burst into the public eye at the Masters last year, surprising everyone by finishing in second place in his first ever time playing at Augusta National.
One week away from his second appearance at the Masters, I got the chance to talk to Zalatoris about a variety of topics. From how sports betting has exploded in golf, to the side action he has with Tony Romo when the two play against each other, as well as which courses he performs at his best on the PGA Tour.
WynnBET has Zalatoris' odds set at +4000 (bet $100 to profit $4,000), and speaking of odds, I asked him if he found it annoying when fans shout at him to let him know they bet on him during events.
"I actually think it's funny... I always do get a good laugh at some of the guys saying, 'I have my mortgage on you, Zalatoris,' and I'm like, 'Well, sounds like a pretty bad bet to me!'"
He's also known for frequently golfing with former NFL quarterback Tony Romo. I had to ask him if the two have any side action when they play. He said they did, and also that at times he gets even more nervous for a big putt against Romo than he does during a round on Tour.
"I could have a putt for a top 10 on 18 that could more worth a lot of money, but if I have a putt to lose a couple hundreds bucks to a guy like Tony or any of the other pros I play with, it matters, I care. Not that I don't care on Tour, but it's just funny how the fact that he might be taking money out of my pocket that just erks me."
After talking about this year's Masters, which you'll have to watch to the interview to hear, I had to ask him one more question about betting. It's known in the golf betting world that some golfers always perform well at certain courses, ones they feel fit their game to perfection. I ask Will which courses on Tour he feels he does the best at, and now I know what events I'll be absolutely betting on him at.
"Torrey Pines for sure. I'm not just saying that because of recency bias of me just barely missing out on the playoff, but you gotta hit it straight, you gotta hit it far. The longer the golf course, the better for me, the tougher the golf course, the better for me."
Finally, I had to finish off by asking him about his San Francisco Giants and whether or not they have a chance to compete this year.
"I hope so. Losing Bryant's a tough one, but throwing in the DH will help. We need some right-handed bats, we got too many left-handed bats right now. Something those guys have done really good is their bullpen, something that kept them in it... It's going to be tough, but last year was a pretty good surprise so I've always got faith in my guys."
