Wimbledon Odds: Serena Williams Is Biggest Threat to Favorite Ashleigh Barty
Last week, Ashleigh Barty was the clear favorite to win the Women’s side of Wimbledon. As time has passed by, that is no longer the case. Barty’s odds are now +600 and her biggest challenge, at least according to the odds, is now Serena Williams.
Williams’ odds have stayed the same over the last week, holding still at +650. It’s Barty that WynnBET has lost faith in. Barty was +500 immediately after the news that Naomi Osaka would not be competing. Barty and Osaka were No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the odds standings.
However, Williams is closer than ever to Barty and has the Wimbledon title on her mind. It's been five years since Williams has been the last one standing in London. In the four tournaments since she missed 2017 due to pregnancy, Williams lost in the final in 2018 and 2019 and the 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID-19. Now, Williams has an opportunity to regain that title.
For Williams, getting back to the top of the sport post-pregnancy has been a struggle. While she’s played in four finals since giving birth, she hasn’t been able to break through.
Winning a tournament would not only be a gigantic accomplishment, but it would also make history. Another Grand Slam title would tie her with Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam wins ever.
Since her Australian Open win, Williams has been chasing the record, but this is as good a chance as ever for her with the field being wide open.
Barty is the No. 1 ranked player in the world, but she only has one Grand Slam to her name. They have not come as easy for her since winning the French Open in 2019. With Barty still trying to solidify her name in the tennis world, Williams has a great opportunity to make the upset and go all the way.
