The Nebraska Cornhuskers are desperate to turn their program back into a college football national contender like it was in the 1990’s, but it’s been a struggle, especially under head coach Scott Frost who has led them to a losing season in his first three seasons with the team.

Despite the subpar history for Nebraska in recent years, there’s a lot to be optimistic about heading into the 2021 season.

WynnBET has released win projections for the top teams across the country, and it has Nebraska’s win total for the 2021 season set at 6.5. If its able to surpass that win total, Nebraska will have its first winning season since 2016.

The Cornhuskers are also third on the odds list to win the Big Ten West. Wisconsin (-108) and Iowa (+115) are the only teams in the division listed with shorter odds.

Adrian Martinez will return at quarterback for Nebraska, and he’s expected to once again play an integral role in the running game. The quarterbacks accounted for 55% of the teams rushing yards in 2020, and more of the same is expected in 2021.

The biggest question on offense for Nebraska is at receiver, as they lost their top target, Wan’Dale Robinson, to the transfer portal. Struggling to get proven talent at wideout to stay with the team is an unfortunate reality of an offense that heavily favors the run game.

Montana transfer Samori Toure is expected to fill the void left by Robinson.

Nebraska will rely on its defense to carry the team this season. Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt, who is returning to the team despite likely being selected in the NFL Draft following his junior season, will provide a big boost to the Cornhuskers secondary.

With a strong core of returning players and Scott Frost having had time to establish his culture within the program, there’s no reason Nebraska can’t finish the 2021 season with a winning record.
