Worst College Football Bad Beats from Week 1 (College Kickers Return to Ruin Your Day)
By Ben Heisler
Following a five-day weekend jam-packed with tons of college football, fans and bettors alike are back in the swing of things as the season's officially underway.
For many of you, plenty of bets from the opening weekend may have gone your way, for others, the dreadful return of college football bad beats spoiled some of the fun.
We saw a number of them in Week 1, highlighted by some brutal missed extra points, costly turnovers, and even one quarterback finding a way to lose a touchdown thanks to the "Turf Monster."
Which bad beats made the cut for the worst of the week? Let's find out below.
Worst Bad Beats of the Week
Colgate vs. Stanford OVER 51.5
The Cardinal had this one largely in hand, up 35-10 with 3:15 left to go in the game and driving on Colgate's 7-yard line.
With the total sitting at 51.5, one more touchdown and extra point would be all she wrote for over backers to cash in with plenty of time left to go.
The Cardinal got the touchdown on a seven-yard strike from Ari Patu to Mudia Reuben to make it 41-10, but then Emmet Kenney, in for the injured place-kicker Joshua Karty, doinked it off the right side of the pole and the total of 51 remained... for the rest of the game.
WKU vs. Hawaii OVER 67.5
There were 66 total points in the game with 4 minutes left to go and WKU up 49-17. However, Hawaii is driving and has 1st and goal from the 1-yard mark with 2:46 left to go. The Hilltoppers go on to make a few goal line stands and force a 3rd and Goal from the 5-yard line. Quarterback Cammon Cooper looks like he has daylight for six, but falls just short on his own accord.
Apparently, the "Turf Monster" had the under in this game, as 49-17 (66) went on to give the under 67.5 the win.
Florida State vs. LSU OVER 50.5
One might look at the scoreboard and say, "the total finished at 47, so how is this a bad beat?"
There's a few different ways to break this one down.
Remember, the only reason the missed extra point happened in the first place was a goal line fumble from Florida State; giving the Tigers a chance to score with 1:20 to go; needing to march 99 yards down the field.
A touchdown and extra point from FSU would have made it 31-17, bringing the total to 48, and likely allowing LSU to get a backdoor cover since the first touchdown wouldn't have mattered much to begin with.
Instead, the Seminoles fumble, LSU goes the full 99 yards and quarterback Jayden Daniels delivers a perfect throw to the end zone for six with no time left on the clock. If the extra point by Damian Ramos is good, that would have made the score 24-24, all but guaranteeing that unless a safety took place, a guaranteed OVER 50.5 would have hit.
