The PGA Tour heads to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina for its final tournament of the regular season, the Wyndham Championship.

Most of the top golfers, with their spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs secured, will take this week off in preparation for next week’s Northern Trust. This week’s event is all about golfers improving their seeding ahead of the postseason, and more importantly, those on the outside of the bubble will have one final chance to secure their PGA Tour membership for the next season.

You must finish in the top 125 of the FedEx Cup standings in order to qualify for the playoffs as well as guarantee your card for the following season. While there are many golfers who have already qualified for next year by other means, there are still a large amount of players who will need to perform well this week to lock up a spot in the top 125.

Handicapping Sedgefield Country Club

Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross designed course, and the course is as perfect of an example of a Ross designed course as you’ll find.

It’s not long, measuring at only 7,127 yards, but golfers will need to be as accurate as possible with their drivers and irons if they want to succeed this weekend. Wipe driving distance out of your mind, as length will give competitors almost no significant advantage at Sedgefield.

Instead, we want to target golfers who keep it in the fairway and find greens on a regular basis.

We also want to bet on golfers who can drain birdies at a high rate. The winning score in five straight years at the Wyndham Championship has been at least 21-under par.

Key Stats for the Wyndham Championship

Picks to win the Wyndham Championship

Webb Simpson +1100

I hardly recognize myself as of late. I’ve long been of the belief that you shouldn’t bet on the favorite in a golf tournament, but here I am doing just that for the third time in as many weeks. I missed on my Collin Morikawa pick at the men’s Olympics, but hit on Nelly Korda as the +700 favorite at the women’s event last week.

Webb Simpson is the +1100 favorite this week, but it’s completely justified. The Wyndham Championship was his first ever win on the PGA Tour in 2011, and just look at how he’s performed here since then.

That’s right, he’s finished in the top three in four straight years, and has really only had one bad showing (2016) since getting his maiden victory.

If you’re not yet convinced that he loves this event, you should know that he named his daughter, born in 2014, “Wyndham” in honor of the tournament. I feel like you have to bet on him at this event every year almost solely based on that factoid.

His game fits Sedgefield Country Club to perfection, and I have no issue betting on him as the favorite at +1100 odds.

Jason Kokrak +2500

The Wyndham Championship is going to once again be a birdie fest, and nobody in the field drains birdies at a higher rate this season than Jason Kokrak. He currently ranks 13th in birdie average at 4.22, but the 12 golfers ahead of him in that stat aren’t competing this week.

Kokrak is also one of the few golfers to already have multiple wins this season, winning both the CJ Cup in October and the Charles Schwab Challenge in May. He’s had success at the Wyndham Championship, with three finishes in the top 16 over the past four years, including a fourth place finish in 2019.

As long as his driver doesn’t betray him this week, he’ll be in contention on Sunday.

Hank Lebioda +5000

Hank Lebioda was one of the hottest golfers on the PGA Tour, with three consecutive finishes inside the top 8, but withdrew from the 3M Open in late July due to his father falling ill.

He makes his return this week as he’ll try to improve on his 87th rank in the FedEx Cup standings, and this tournament could be the perfect time for him to get his first win on Tour. He ranks 19th in greens in regulation percentage, and 42nd in strokes gained: total.

Many of the stats can be misleading as well, as he had a tough stretch at the start of the season. He’s been playing much better than the numbers indicate, truly finding his stride at the beginning of May.

With this week’s field being relatively weak, Lebioda is as good of a value pick as you’ll find on the board.
