New York Yankees fans woke up this morning to Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” playing in their mind as the Yankees have somehow taken the top spot in the American League wild card race.

Less than a month ago, the Yankees were 9.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox, but New York swept yesterday’s doubleheader to climb into a three-way tie with the Red Sox and Oakland Athletics in the wild card race.

What a turnaround. I feel for my friend and coworker Iain MacMillan, who took the Yankees to miss the playoffs a few weeks back. An all around tough scene.

New York’s pitching got the job done on Tuesday, allowing just three runs in the two-game doubleheader (seven innings each) and Giancarlo Stanton had clutch hits in both games to lead the Yankees to victory.

Now, WynnBET has the Yankees jumping the Red Sox in its World Series odds, as New York is now +1200 to win the title while Boston is +1500.

The Yankees were +2000 to win the World Series at the All-Star break, but New York has been on fire since the trade deadline, compiling a 15-4 record.

With Anthony Rizzo, Gio Urshela, Gleyber Torres all looking like they’re close to a return, and Corey Kluber rehabbing his shoulder injury, the Yankees seem poised to continue their second-half run after finally getting back to even in the playoff race.

Boston has been fading fast, even with the return of Chris Sale, but it will have a chance to overtake the Yankees in the final game of their series tonight.

New York is a slight -113 favorite over Boston (+103) in the final game, but with the home-run prone Andrew Heaney on the mound for the Yankees, Boston has a great opportunity to salvage something from what has been a disappointing series to this point.
