Yankees vs. Red Sox Prediction: Will New York Take the Wild Card Lead with Their Sixth Straight Win?
By Thomas Snodgrass
There is a tie at the top of the American League Wild Card standings between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, with the AL East rival Toronto Blue Jays hanging around, just two games back. New York will attempt to win its six straight game and take the AL Wild Card lead as it faces the Red Sox tonight at Fenway Park.
Two left-handed pitchers take the mound, Jordan Montgomery for the Yankees and Eduardo Rodriguez for the Red Sox.
Montgomery (6-6, 3.55 ERA) has pitched well in his last two outings, allowing just one earned run in 5 ⅔ innings against the Baltimore Orioles while striking out 12. He followed that performance by giving up just one earned run in 5 ⅔ innings against the Texas Rangers and striking out six. This season against Montgomery, Boston has batted just .235 with two home runs and nine RBI in 81 at-bats.
Rodriguez (11-8, 4.97 ERA) has had issues with consistency all season, posting a 3.52 ERA in April, a 7.28 ERA in May, a 6.23 ERA in June, a 4.71 ERA in July, a 3.33 ERA in August, and a 4.05 ERA in September. He takes the hill tonight at Fenway, and the home ballpark has not done him any favors in 2021 where Rodriguez has a 6.16 ERA at home compared to a 4.22 ERA on the road.
Here’s how the odds for this AL East showdown stand on WynnBET Sportsbook.
Yankees vs. Red Sox Odds
Moneyline: Yankees -105, Red Sox -115

Total: 9.5 (Over -115/Under -105)
Red Sox vs Yankees Prediction
A few of the right-handed batters in New York's lineup have had success off of Rodriguez. Second baseman D.J. LeMahieu has batted .300 (6-for-20), first baseman Luke Voit has hit .385 (5-for-13) with one home run, third baseman Gio Urshela has hit .316 (6-for-19) with one home run, and shortstop Gleyber Torres has hit .364 (8-for-22) with three home runs and nine RBI against Rodriguez. Would not be surprised if Torres has a big impact on this game tonight as his bat is finally starting to heat up, batting .321 in his last 15 games.
Neither Montgomery or Rodriguez have been able to go too deep into games this season, so it looks like the bullpens could be coming out early tonight.
I don’t like Rodriguez’s matchups with New York’s potentially right-handed heavy lineup, and the fact that he has been shelled at home. I’m taking the Bronx Bombers tonight at -105.
