The New York Yankees’ west coast trip continues on Monday, as they begin a series with the Los Angeles Angels.

New York took the first two games it had against the Oakland Athletics, but it dropped both weekend matchups, shortening its lead in the AL East to just 7.5 games. The Angels aren’t a good team, but they do come into this series on a three-game winning streak.

Frankie Montas (4-10, 3.84 ERA) gets the ball for New York in his fifth start as a Yankee against José Suarez (4-6, 4.19 ERA).

New York needs a win, but will it get one with Montas, who has struggled since the trade deadline, on the mound?

Yankees vs. Angels Prediction and Pick

Montas has a 7.32 ERA as a Yankee, but he did pitch 5.2 innings of two-run ball against the New York Mets in his last outing. Still, I’m not sure New York has as big of a pitching advantage as you may think.

Suarez hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start since July 26, and he has a 1.93 ERA over his last five outings, with the Angels winning three of those games.

Montas has really struggled away from Oakland this season, and it’s shown during his time with the Yankees. I’m surprised New York didn’t try to get him a start against the A’s over the weekend.

Given the way the Yankees have played this month, going just 9-16, I think this is a spot to back the Angels as a home dog.
