The New York Yankees are showing no signs of fading as we head into July. The Bombers are coming off a sweep of the A’s to start the week, and continue to grow their massive lead in the AL East. There isn’t a team within a dozen games of them as they continue to crush teams on a regular basis. Their next victims are the Cleveland Guardians with Game 1 kicking off today. These teams are somewhat well matched but the Guardians are in trouble in the pitching department this afternoon.

Yankees vs. Guardians Prediction and Pick

Webster's dictionary defines the term “pitching mismatch” as this game between Gerrit Cole and Aaron Civale. While Cole has had some ups and downs since the “sticky stuff” ban, it’s been mostly good for the Yankees’ superstar. Cole enters this game at 6-2 with a 2.99 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 87 ⅓ innings pitched. He’s given up more than one earned run in just one of his last five starts and has two shutouts in that span. His last trip to the mound was a seven-inning game against the Astros. He was saddled with the win after the Yankees got no-hit by Houston, but that is hardly his fault. Over the course of his career, Cole has routinely dominated this lineup with a .194 batting average. In 70 at-bats, the current Guardians have just six extra-base hits compared to 21 strikeouts.

In stark contrast, Civale sports a 2-4 record in 40 innings with a 7.20 ERA and 1.60 WHIP. Frankly, i'm surprised the Guardians are giving him another go at this point. He’s made just two starts this month, spanning nine innings. Civale allowed six runs in those nine innings while striking out nine and walking six. The current Yankees are hitting .252 against him with three 11 XBHs in 97 at-bats. But, the Yankees are so hot at the moment that I don’t think most pitchers can hang with them. Civale is certainly not one of those pitchers.

Pick: Yankees -1.5 (-125)
