Zach Wilson's OTA Performance Should Place Him Rookie of the Year Conversation
By Peter Dewey
Did the New York Jets finally get it right?
After trading away failed draft pick Sam Darnold, the Jets selected Zach Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft. Wilson, who burst onto the national scene last year at BYU, has looked the part so far in OTAs.
His teammates are taking notice as well, and Wilson could surprise some people to help the Jets beat WynnBET’s projected win total of 6.5 wins in 2021.
The Jets have +500 odds to make the postseason in 2021, and while Wilson may not be able to make them that good, his Offensive Rookie of the Year odds are intriguing.
WynnBET currently has Wilson with the fourth-highest odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year at +800.
However, Wilson seems to have a direct path to the starting job in New York, and two of the rookies above him on the odds list do not.
Both Trey Lance (+700) and Justin Fields (+525) aren’t guaranteed to start this season, and they still have better odds than Wilson. Matt Nagy has endorsed Andy Dalton as the Chicago Bears’ starter multiple times this offseason.
Wilson has some weapons around him with the addition of Corey Davis and the return of Jamison Crowder, but he will also need Elijah Moore and Denzel Mims to prove why they were both second-round picks by the Jets in the past two drafts.
Sure it’s only OTAs, but it’s great to see Wilson get off to a good start rather than struggling out of the gate.
There’s a chance this is the lowest that Wilson’s ROY odds will be all year, so it may be time to put some of your faith in the Jets quarterback before it’s too late.
