Did Alabama's Bryce Young Just Win Back the Heisman Trophy?
By Ben Heisler
"Bryce Young, white courtesy phone? Bryce Young, white courtesy phone?"
"Your Heisman Trophy is waiting for you."
After entering the week second in Heisman Trophy odds to Ohio State freshman QB C.J. Stroud, Alabama sophomore quarterback Bryce Young looked like he was dead in the water for a shot at the most prestigious award in college football.
Then, momentum started to shift.
The Buckeyes, an 8-point favorite to John Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines lost outright 42-27 in Ann Arbor. With a statement performance, Young's shot at the Heisman was back on track.
The statement came; it just took more than 58 minutes to happen.
The Crimson Tide were pinned back at their own 3-yard line, down 10-3 to the Auburn Tigers with 1:35 left to go in the ballgame. Young, who hadn't thrown for one touchdown in the game, matched Alabama down the field in 12 plays and 97 yards, including a stunning 28-yard touchdown throw and catch to Ja'Corey Brooks.
Young finished the game 25/51 for 17 yards, two touchdown passes and a pick. While the numbers aren't as flashy as Stroud's (34/49, 394 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs), without Young's poise and touchdown strikes in the 4th quarter and overtime, Alabama likely falls as a 19-point favorite and is taken out of the College Football Playoff.
Here were the most recent Heisman odds entering the week:
- C.J. Stroud: -350
- Bryce Young: +260
- Field: +5000
- Matt Corral: +5000
- Desmond Ridder: +8000
- Brian Robinson Jr. : +50000
- Chris Olave: +50000
It's also worth considering that Michigan's Aiden Hutchinson may have entered the race with the Wolverine's upset performance over the Buckeyes, as Hutchinson set Michigan's all-time single season sack record in the win.
Regardless of who wins, the final regular season game for the bulk of these teams has made it a much closer race than initially anticipated.
