Aaron Judge vs. Shohei Ohtani: Which AL MVP Candidate's Player Props Should You Bet in Yankees vs. Angels?

The American League MVP race may be all but decided, but that hasn't stopped anyone from hyping up the matchup tonight between the top two candidates in the sport.

Aaron Judge, the consensus favorite to walk away with the hardware takes his New York Yankees into Anaheim to face Shohei Ohtani and the L.A. Angels for the start of a three-game series at Angel Stadium. The Yankees come in as sizable moneyline favorites on the road against the Angels, but also just lost two straight to the worst team in the AL in the Oakland Athletics.

Aaron Judge vs. Shohei Ohtani: Who is More Likely to Hit a Home Run?

Both Judge and Ohtani make up two of our three picks in today's "Daily Dinger" MLB home run prop bets. While Reed Wallach makes plenty of compelling points in favorite of Ohtani, I'm backing Judge in a matchup that he's dominated all season long: left-handed pitchers.

Judge leads the American League in isolated power, or ISO against lefties this year at .383. The average ISO is traditionally around .140, so the Yankees' center fielder comes in just under 2.75x more than the replacement level player. That's good news for New York's slugger before digging in against José Suarez this evening.

Ohtani has seen Yankees starter Frankie Montas plenty of times and has three career home runs against him in 21 career at-bats. While those numbers set up awfully well, I'll take the best power hitter in the American League who does his best work agains southpaws.

PICK: Aaron Judge

Aaron Judge vs. Shohei Ohtani: Who will Have More Total Bases?

I'm picking Ohtani here, even though that could be seen as technically going against my play above. If anything, it's more of a hedge in the event that Judge simply doesn't go deep, while getting very good odds on a player who's dominated Montas in his career.

In 27 plate appearances, Ohtani has eight hits, including the aforementioned three home runs, as well as six walks compared to only five strikeouts. He's on-base percentage vs. the Yankees' right-hander is .519 for his career.

As for Judge, while the numbers overall set up well vs. left-handers, he's just 1-4 with a single against Suarez, but also has three walks as well.

With the longer sample size, along with the success both with walks and hits, the better value here actually comes with Ohtani at plus-odds, relative to Judge at a worse number.
