Angels vs. Mariners Prediction: Can Seattle Still Snag a Final Wild Card Spot?
By Ben Heisler
For a team that had a 3.3% playoff percentage at the beginning of September, the Mariners' being one game out of the American League Wild Card race is a remarkable accomplishment.
Seattle has been defying the odds and the math all season long. They were projected to finish last in their division with the Rangers and are -47 in run differential. Their expected win/loss record should actually be 76-85, rather than where their current record stands at 90-71.
In fact, their odds to win the World Series at WynnBET were all the way at +10000 at the start of September. Now? They're down to +7500.
Today, they can move the odds even more in their favor when they host the Los Angeles Angels at T-Mobile Park in Seattle at 12:10 pm PT. Seattle comes in as -175 favorites on the moneyline (bet $175 to win $100 for the Mariners to win outright), and are -1.5 on the run line at plus-odds of +115 (win $115 with a $100 bet). For the Angles, they're +160 underdogs on the road, and are +1.5 on the run line at -135 odds. The total is a low one of 7 runs for this afternoon's matchup.
Angels vs. Mariners Pitching Matchup
The Mariners look to keep their slim playoff chances alive with left-hander Tyler Anderson (7-10, 4.41 ERA) on the mound against fellow lefty Reid Detmers (1-3, 7.11).
Detmers, the Angels' first round draft pick in 2020 has had a rough start to his big league career, but has improved over his last two starts. After giving up 11 earned runs through 9.1 innings, he has settled down, giving up just 4 ER over his last 9.2 IP.
Anderson, had a solid month of September that completely inflated his ERA with nine earned runs in just two innings against these Angels on the road back on September 25th. Other than that blowup game, he's gone 26 innings giving up just 10 runs.
Seattle Mariners Playoff Scenarios
Seattle currently sits behind three other teams for a spot in the Wild Card in the American League: The Red Sox and Yankees (91-70), along with the Blue Jays (90-71) are all up in the standings on the Mariners. If Seattle gets into the Wild Card game, they'll need two of those three teams to lose to get a shot to play.
The Yankees host the Rays, the Blue Jays are nearly 1/3 favorites vs. the Orioles, and the Red Sox wrapping up their series in D.C. against the Nationals
Angels vs. Mariners Prediction and Pick
The Mariners got a massive come-from-behind victory last night with a walkoff hit from Mitch Haniger to keep their playoff hopes alive.
This might be a trap, but I really like the over in this game, despite the Mariners' inconsistencies on offense down the stretch of the season. With both Anderson and Detmers struggling to find consistency in the rotation, I think both starters could end up being out early as this game goes back and forth.
I'll lean (but not bet) on the Mariners to win on the money line, and will instead grab the OVER 7 runs.
PREDICTION: Angels vs. Mariners OVER 7
