Buyers and Sellers at NFL Trade Deadline: Trust Green Bay to Go All In
By Thomas Snodgrass
The NFL’s trade deadline may not be as active as the NBA, MLB, or NHL's, but the NFL is in the center of the American sports universe, so any move gets quite a bit of attention.
Many players have had their names floated about in the rumor mill, such as wide receiver Allen Robinson of the Chicago Bears, running back Melvin Gordon of the Denver Broncos, safety Marcus Maye of the New York Jets and quarterback Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans.
Who’s buying and who’s selling prior to the Nov. 2 deadline?
Here is a look at several potential teams on both sides, along with their Super Bowl 56 odds, courtesy of WynnBET Sportsbook.
Buyers: Green Bay Packers (+1100)
The Packers sit at 6-1 and have a comfortable lead in the NFC North, but that doesn’t mean they should sit back and relax.
In Week 8, Green Bay could be playing on Thursday Night Football without wide receivers Davante Adams and Allen Lazard. If both receivers do sit out and the Packers struggle against the high-flying Arizona Cardinals, then they could go out and bolster their receiving corps.
While Allen Robinson would make an interesting piece for Rodgers to throw to, the Bears will almost never trade such a talented player to Green Bay. One man that could make his way to the Packers is Odell Beckham Jr.
A change of scenery could do OBJ some good.
Sellers: Miami Dolphins (+50000)
The Dolphins have stumbled to a 1-6 start and sit at the bottom of the AFC East with the New York Jets. That’s a sad place to be.
Despite being 1-6, there are some talented players on this team that could be better fit elsewhere; one of them being cornerback Xavien Howard.
Howard is a former Pro-Bowl cornerback who could help shore up anyone’s passing defense. After losing Troy Hill to the Cleveland Browns, the Los Angeles Rams should scoop up Howard as his replacement and run Howard opposite of Jalen Ramsey.
Buyers: Baltimore Ravens (+1200)
After getting destroyed by the Cincinnati Bengals last week, the Ravens could add to their current roster.
Baltimore’s passing defense has been devastatingly bad. The Ravens are allowing 312.3 passing yards per game, 32nd in the NFL, and could use a little help in their defensive secondary.
They could also use Xavien Howard from the Dolphins, but if Marcus Maye is available, that wouldn’t hurt either. Maye can do a lot, roaming in the defensive backfield and can make plays at the line of scrimmage and be effective on blitz calls.
The Ravens could use more than just a coverage guy.
Sellers: Houston Texans (+200000)
The Texans are garbage and they’ve already started selling, sending Mark Ingram back to the New Orleans Saints. Teammate Brandin Cooks wasn’t a big fan of the deal.
Cooks may be packing his bags as you’re reading this.
Cooks would make a decent addition to the Las Vegas Raiders receiving corps. They did just release Willie Snead, so a spot may be open for a move.
It may be only a matter of time before Deshaun Watson has a new employer as well; although any team will have to accept whatever baggage he brings along with him.
Who knows how many pieces this team could sell?
