The Cincinnati Bengals are the No. 1 seed in the AFC and the Kansas City Chiefs are 3-4 and are at risk of missing the playoffs. This NFL season hasn’t exactly got off to the start that people expected.

So how do we treat the Chiefs moving forward? Are they legitimately a bad football team, or are they just suffering through a bad stretch and will eventually turn things around?

They’re stumbling down the odds list to win the Super Bowl, as WynnBET now has them listed at +1600, which is ninth on the list. It’s a far cry from being the betting favorites at the start of the season. They’re also no longer favorites to win the AFC West, as the Chargers have now taken over that spot at -110 and Kansas City is listed at +225.

Can the Chiefs Still Win the Super Bowl?

With an offense as talented as the Chiefs, it’s hard to completely discount them only seven weeks into the NFL season. My main concern isn’t the turnovers for the Chiefs, but it’s the Kansas City defense that is the cause of many of their troubles.

You can have the best offense in NFL history, but it won’t matter when your defense is historically bad. Opposing offenses are averaging an astounding 6.6 yards per play against this defense. The next worst team is the Jaguars, who are allowing 6.3 yards per play. That means the Chiefs defense isn’t just the worst in the NFL, but they’re the worst by a wide margin.

Insanity.

While some people seem to be worried about Patrick Mahomes and his NFL-leading nine interceptions, I’m confident he’ll turn things around sooner rather than later.

Instead, it’s due to their defense that I would recommend staying away from any futures bets on this team. Especially considering they still have the Packers, Cowboys, and Chargers left on their schedule.

Their defensive woes are too major to be fixed this season. The Kansas City front office will have to turn to the drawing board in the offseason to try to create some resemblance of a defense for next season.
