Dalton Schultz vs. Blake Jarwin: Who Will Be Cowboys Top Tight End?

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw for four touchdowns in the team’s Week 4 win over the Carolina Panthers, hitting tight ends Dalton Schultz and Blake Jarwin for one score each. 

Jarwin, who missed all but one game of the 2020 season, has been pegged as Dallas’ top tight end the past two seasons, but it’s clear that is not the case through the first four weeks of the 2021 campaign. 

Schultz led Dallas with eight targets in Week 4, and he reeled in six of those targets for 58 yards. Only CeeDee Lamb (five targets) saw more than three looks in the win. 

Schultz had a strong 2020 season, pulling in 63 receptions for 615 yards and four scores, and he appears to be on the fast track to leading the Dallas tight end group, and potentially eating into the work of the star receiving corps as well, this season.

Jarwin is still seeing the field, but it’s clear Schultz is the team’s preferred option in the passing game. His role may decrease when Michael Gallup returns from injured reserve, but he has certainly earned his fair share of targets so far this season.

The 2018 fourth-round pick has seen six, two, seven, and eight targets in his four games. He and Jarwin can be a lethal duo for Dallas, but Schultz is the player to back if you’re betting on touchdown scorer props, receiving yards props, or simply looking to play him in a fantasy football lineup.
