Derek Carr Showing He's Legitimate MVP Candidate
By Peter Dewey
Derek Carr and the Las Vegas Raiders are 2-0, and it’s time to get a hot take off.
Carr is a legitimate MVP candidate through the first two weeks of the season.
Will he win the award at season’s end? Most likely not.
But it’s really hard to find a quarterback playing better than Carr, against tougher opponents, through the first two weeks of the year. After a come-from-behind win in overtime against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1, Carr threw for another 382 yards and two scores against a stingy Pittsburgh Steelers team in Sunday’s win.
The Raiders play in arguably the toughest division in the NFL, as the two teams expected to finish at the bottom (Las Vegas and Denver) are both 2-0 to start the year making the division 6-0 so far this season.
WynnBET had Carr at +7500 to win the league’s MVP award after Week 1, and that’s just downright disrespectful. Those odds were worse than Trey Lance (+6000), who isn’t even a starter, Carson Wentz (+5000), Kirk Cousins (+6000) and the same as Saquon Barkley and Chase Young.
Give me a break.
Carr isn’t the best quarterback in football, but he’s shown that he may be making a move up the ladder. FanSided National NFL Insider Matt Verderame had Carr ranked at No. 12 in his Quarterback Power Rankings after Week 1, and he may deserve to move up that list after Week 2.
Carr is going to surge in the odds on WynnBET after this week’s games, but if he doesn’t +7500 is a great value to take him at, especially considering he had one of the best seasons of his career in 2020.
Last year, Carr threw for a career-high 4,103 yards, and with 817 and four scores through the first two weeks of this season, he looks to be poised to break that career-high on a winning team.
