'Doomsday' Sunday for Bookmakers in Week 6
By Ben Heisler
Whenever the head oddsmaker for a sportsbook refers to a weekend as a "doomsday," you know it was a huge victory for the betting public.
But that was the exact terminology used by Senior Trading Manager Alan Berg at WynnBET this weekend, as bettors clobbered the sportsbooks, particularly in the NFL in Week 6.
"Every now and then there is a doomsday weekend for us and this was it," Berg told BetSided.
"(The) Cowboys game really crushed us as did the Cardinals continuing to be an unstoppable buzzsaw. Being in a new state like Arizona having this Cardinals team 6-0 you can imagine how well that’s going for the fans down there."
The sportsbook's two highest liability games in Week 6 went against them. The second game was a blowout as the Kansas City Chiefs covered the 7-point spread comfortably on the road against the Washington Football Team 31-13. But it was the Cowboys' comeback on the road vs. the Patriots that made for the hardest blow for the sportsbook, as well as for a brutal bad beat for Patriots bettors at +3 or +3.5.
This is the second consecutive week that WynnBET took a beatdown from their bettors.
Back in Week 5 of the NFL (and Week 6) of the college football season, several sportsbooks, including WynnBET saw their highest liability games go in favor of the bettors.
Here were the top three college and NFL games that week according to WynnBET communications.
Highest Liability College Football Week 6:
- No. 2 Georgia spread (-15) at No. 18 Auburn - WIN
- No. 3 Iowa spread (-1.5) vs. No. 4 Penn State - WIN
- Texas A&M spread (+17.5) vs. No. 1 Alabama - WIN
Highest Liability NFL Week 5:
- Arizona Cardinals’ spread (-5.5) vs. San Francisco 49ers - WIN
- Green Bay Packers’ spread (-3, -105) at Cincinnati Bengals - PUSH
- Tennessee Titans’ spread (-5) at Jacksonville Jaguars - WIN
Public Bettors May Want to Side with the Sportsbooks This Week
While fading the public is traditionally a solid betting strategy, they may want to consider it even more strongly for this upcoming week.
Favorites went 7-0 in the early slate and ended up covering in 8 of the 11 games on Sunday. Heading into Week 6, underdogs were 45-35 ATS.
