Every Big 12 Team's Predicted Win Total for 2022 Season: What Are Oklahoma's Expectations Post-Lincoln Riley
By Reed Wallach
Of all the Power 5 conferences, the Big 12 is as wide open as it gets.
Oklahoma is still the favorite to win it, but it's not the usual suspects in Norman, as former head coach Lincoln Riley bolted for USC and brought star recruit, quarterback Caleb Williams, with him. The school brought in Brent Venables to coach, who nabbed former UCF QB Dillon Gabriel in the transfer portal.
After the Sooners, it's Texas and a host of competitive teams such as Oklahoma State and Baylor making up the top of the conference heading into 2022. How does the whole conference stack up?
Let's look at each team's win totals from FanDuel Sportsbook:
2022 Big 12 Win Totals
- Baylor: 7.5 (Over -170/Under +145)
- Iowa State: 6.5 (Over -120/Under +100)
- Kansas: 2.5 (Over -145/Under +125)
- Kansas State: 6.5 (Over -160/Under +135)
- Oklahoma: 8.5 (Over -180/Under +155)
- Oklahoma State: 8.5 (Over -110/Under -110)
- TCU: 6.5 (Over -150/Under +125)
- Texas: 8.5 (Over +120/Under -140)
- Texas Tech: 5.5 (Over -105/Under -115)
- West Virginia: 5.5 (Over -130/Under +110)
Oklahoma Has Highest Win Total in Big 12
Three teams have the same win total at 8.5: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas but this is still the Sooners conference heading into the year.
While the margin ahead of the season isn't as wide as it has been in the past, Oklahoma still deserves to be the favorite given the talent on hand. Venables has been regarded as the best defensive coordinator in college football over the past several years at Clemson, so it's not like the Sooners are starting completely over. While this is his first head coaching gig, Venables should get off to a strong start as he rebuilds a defense that fell off in 2021.
On offense, Venables hired Jeff Lebby to head up the unit, who joins from Ole Miss and UCF, leading elite units at both stops. It also helps that Lebby was able to help land Gabriel as the replacement quarterback in the transfer portal, who was with the OC at UCF.
While teams such as TCU and Kansas State present upside further down the board, there is no other choice but to install the still loaded Sooners as top billing in this conference.
Meanwhile, it was the other team from Oklahoma that went to the Big 12 Championship in 2021, the Cowboys under Mike Gundy, who just missed out on a College Football Playoff berth. While the team transitions from defensive coordinator Jim Knowles (now at Ohio State) they return quarterback Spencer Sanders, who will look to get Oklahoma State back to the conference championship game. They enter with the second highest win total in the Big 12.
