Bryce Young is immediately the new betting favorite to win this year’s Heisman Trophy. Or at least he should be.

UPDATE: He is.

With two games left to go in Week 1 of the college football slate, oddsmakers have yet to release updated betting odds to win the Heisman Trophy, but you have to imagine that the Alabama quarterback will sit atop the list when it is released.

Heading into yesterday’s games, Young was third on the oddsboard at WynnBET at +1000. He sat behind Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler (+450) and Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei (+900), both of whom had subpar performances in Week 1.

Rattler threw two interceptions as Oklahoma barely escaped with the win against Tulane, and Uiagalelei threw for only 178 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception as Clemson was held to only three points in a 10-3 loss to Georgia.

While those two struggled, Young thrived. He put up Heisman-esque numbers in a 44-13 trouncing of Miami. The sophomore completed 27-of-38 passes for 344 yards and four touchdowns.

There’s no reason to believe that sort of performance won’t make him the early front runner for the award.

Alabama has never had a quarterback win the Heisman Trophy, but if Young continues to put up those kinds of numbers, he could finally be the one to break that trend.

The other eye-popping performance that we witnessed in Week 1 was Michigan State’s Kenneth Walker III. The running back snapped for 264 yards and four touchdowns against a Northwestern defense that ranked 19th in opponent yards per game last season.

His name wasn’t even on the odds list to win the Heisman Trophy heading into Week 1, but expect him to make an appearance on the list this week.
