Expect Cowboys, Vikings, Ravens to be Most Popular NFL Teaser Teams in Week 5
By Ben Heisler
If you've played all underdogs this NFL season, congrats on letting "the big dog" eat!
Through the first four weeks of the NFL, underdogs covered the spread at just under 60%, going 38-26 against the spread.
Our Iain MacMillan looked up the latest trends for the year and shared them via @BetSided on Twitter, but the bottom line is, if you've gone with picking favorites, particularly home favorites ATS this year, it's likely been a tough first four games.
Meanwhile, finding effective six-point two-team teasers in the NFL each week continues to be an effective way to gain an edge on the sportsbooks. Last week in our NFL best bets roundtable, I teased two small underdogs in Baltimore and Seattle past the magic numbers of 3 and 7. While I could have just parlayed them instead since both won outright, that teaser play hit and the bet cashed.
Additionally, two of the most public teams of Week 4 were the Green Bay Packers at -6.5 vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at -7 at the New England Patriots. If bettors would have wagered on those two favorites outright, they would have gone 1-1. If they would have done a two-way 6-point teaser, that would have brought the Bucs down to -1, therefore covering the spread in a 19-17 win against New England. The Patriots covered the original spread, but with a teaser bet, so would Tampa Bay.
Here are three teams I expect to be popular options for teaser bets this week over at WynnBET Sportsbook.
New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys
Cowboys -7 to Cowboys -1
Dallas is cruising through the NFL season as "America's Team" continues to play well in every game so far. Since their two-point loss (covering the -7.5-point spread against Tampa Bay on the road), Dallas has won three straight and are the lone remaining undefeated team ATS in 2021.
Dak Prescott has picked up right where he left off during his outstanding 2020 run before injury, and is back in the NFL MVP race, despite tremendous value odds currently at WynnBET.
Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings
Vikings -8.5 to Vikings -2.5
Minnesota is 1-3, but every loss this year has been by a single possession. The Vikings fell on the road at Cincinnati 27-24 in overtime, missed a chip shot field goal on the road at Arizona to fall 34-33, and fell at home last week to a very good Browns team 14-7.
The Lions are by far and away the worst team they'll play this year, and get them off back-to-back weeks on the road.
Eight points feels a tad bit steep for a team that has had issue putting teams away so far this year, but by getting them at -2 instead, the Vikings should easily cover this number as they try to avoid falling to 1-4.
Indianapolis Colts vs. Baltimore Ravens
Ravens -6.5 to Ravens -0.5
The Monday Night Football matchup offers the opportunity to grab the Ravens after their most impressive win of the season last Sunday, beating the undefeated Broncos 23-7 at Mile High.
Lamar Jackson and Baltimore played only one home game through the first four weeks of the season, and now get the Indianapolis Colts who finally earned their first victory last week on the road at Miami against backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
All the Ravens need is to win the game straight-up at home against a Colts team dealing with multiple injuries on the offensive line and to their quarterback. This should be one of their easiest tasks of the season, especially in prime time.
For fans that feel even more confident in teasers this week, rather than go with the traditional two-way teaser, you can tease all three games for far superior odds at WynnBET.
