Get to Know Western Kentucky Quarterback Bailey Zappe
By Reed Wallach
Western Kentucky has stormed to the top of Conference-USA behind the incredible play of transfer quarterback Bailey Zappe.
After an underwhelming offense in 2020, coach Tyson Helton had enough and wanted to inject some life into that side of the ball. Enter: Zappe and offensive coordinator Zach Kittley.
After running an air raid offense in the FCS ranks at Houston Baptist, Kittley took the job of offensive coordinator at WKU and brought his dynamic quarterback Zappe with him. Not to mention he had several transfer receivers as well from HBU. Overall, Helton essentially implemented the team's explosive offense that nearly upset Texas Tech, North Texas and Louisiana Tech in 2020 to the 2021 Hilltoppers.
The returns have been fantastic as Zappe is on the precipice of history heading into the C-USA title game.
The signal caller finished last week with a ho-hum day for his standards, completing 25-of-38 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Marshall to secure a spot in this week's title game.
His 50th TD pass made him the eighth FBS quarterback to throw for 50 or more touchdowns in a season. On the year, Zappe leads the nation in passing yards and touchdowns, putting him in rare air.
While Zappe won't receive anything more than a few honorable mentions for the Heisman Trophy, his season is historic and a look into possibly the future for Group of Five schools that need reinforcements.
