There’s nothing that gets my blood pumping quite like a college football rivalry.

We’re set to get treated to the first big one of the season this Saturday when Iowa and Iowa State face-off for the Cy-Hawk Trophy.

As much as I love this game, especially this season, let’s come up with a better name for the trophy, shall we? Combining the two team names has to be the laziest cop-out for a trophy name ever.

I digress.

The Hawkeyes have won the past five meetings between the schools, with last year’s edition of the game being cancelled due to schools playing a conference-only schedule.

This season’s game will have some extra spice to it, as both schools are potential contenders in their respective conferences. The Big 10 still belongs to Ohio State and the Big 12 still belongs to Oklahoma, but if there’s any school that can dethrone the Buckeyes or Sooners, it might just be the two teams from Iowa.

Iowa won its first game of the season in dominant fashion, beating No. 17 Indiana 34-6.

Iowa State didn’t have quite as impressive of a performance in Week 1, but it got the job done by taking down Northern Iowa 16-10.

Iowa vs. Iowa State Prediction and Pick

With the amount of turnover we see every season in college football, I have to base the large majority of my handicapping in Week 2 on Week 1 results. If we do that, then all signs point to Iowa.

The Hawkeyes defense shut down a highly touted Indiana team, keeping them out of the endzone for all four quarters. Meanwhile, Iowa State only managed to put up 16 points on an FCS school.

If the Cyclones struggled to score against Northern Iowa, I have to imagine they’ll struggle to score even more against a stout Hawkeyes defense.

Iowa State may have had higher expectations heading into the season, but Iowa had one of the most impressive Week 1 performances in the country.

Give me the Hawkeyes to cover the 4.5-point spread as underdogs.
