Jameis Winston and the Saints ate a “W” on Sunday and blew out the Green Bay Packers

New Orleans, who was displaced to Jacksonville due to Hurricane Ida, was a 4.5-point underdog to the Packers. Even when the game was scheduled to be played in New Orleans, the Saints were still 3.0-point underdogs.

Winston finished with 148 yards and 5 touchdowns, looking as good as he's ever looked. He was efficient as well, completing 14/20 passes on the day. One of Winston’s big issues in the past were his turnovers, but he was mistake free on Sunday.

With his great performance, Winston placed himself near the top of the MVP conversation. He was +3000 on WynnBET coming into the season, but after his Week 1 performance his odds have improved to +1600 (bet $100 to profit $1,600).

The Saints were able to make a statement without Michael Thomas, who won’t be available for at least the first six weeks since he is on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

The hype around Winston for MVP was bubbling before the season, even when he was in a battle with Taysom Hill for the starting job, and Iain MacMillan explained his belief in Winston winning the award during the preseason.

It’s not often you see Aaron Rodgers be outdueled, but that is exactly what happened. Rodgers finished with 133 yards, 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Rodgers was pulled from the game and watched Jordan Love finish the job.

If Week 1 was any indication of the player Winston is going to be for the rest of the season, the Saints might not have any drop off from the Drew Brees-led teams -- and could actually be better.

Winston provides swagger and big play potential, which could lead him to the top of the odds list soon. It’s only one game, but Winston let the league know that he’s for real.
