Sam Darnold will get an early shot at revenge on his former team, the New York Jets, when the Carolina Panthers host them in Week 1.

Darnold is expected to throw for a ton of yards, according to the latest odds at WynnBET, but will he do enough for the Panthers to get a win?

Both teams went a new direction at quarterback this offseason, with the Jets drafting Zach Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick and the Panthers trading away Teddy Bridgewater in favor of Darnold.

It will be interesting to see if the moves work out, and these teams will forever be intertwined based on Darnold and Wilson’s careers. Carolina should be bolstered by Christian McCaffrey’s return this season, and if Darnold can show why he was a former top-three pick, Carolina is a team that could improve greatly from last season’s 5-11 finish.

Here’s how the odds via WynnBET look for Sunday’s 1:00 p.m. EST matchup:

Jets vs. Panthers Spread, Odds and Over/Under

Spread:

Jets +5.0: -110

Panthers -5.0: -110

Moneyline:

Jets: +190

Panthers: -240

Over/Under: 45.0 (Over: -105/Under: -115)

Panthers vs. Jets Betting Trends

  • The Jets were 6-10 against the spread last season, covering just 37.5 percent of the time.
  • Carolina was 9-7 against the spread in 2020.
  • The Jets and Panthers each hit the over in seven of their 16 games last season.
  • Carolina is 4-3 against the Jets all time and has won the last two meetings in 2013 and 2017.

Jets vs. Panthers Prediction and Pick

There’s nothing I love more than a revenge game, and I think Sam Darnold is in a great situation to deliver a classic one in Week 1.

The Panthers are at home, and they face a Jets defense that allowed the fifth-most passing yards in the league last season and just lost top pass-rusher Carl Lawson for the year.

Wilson impressed me during the preseason, but I don’t know if the team around him is good enough to win more than a handful of games in 2021. Carolina has an up-and-coming defense with Derrick Brown, Brian Burns, Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson and Jeremy Chinn, and I think that could be the difference in this one.

Give me the Panthers to cover the five-point spread and for Darnold to have Jets fans questioning a little bit as to why they let Adam Gase ruin his time in New York.
