Lions Quarterback Jared Goff on Team's Playoff Expectations: 'Why Not Us?'
By Peter Dewey
Jared Goff is having a real “Come on, man” moment ahead of Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season.
The new Detroit Lions quarterback has set playoff expectations heading into this season, and while I know he can’t say that his team is going to suck, this is just way too ambitious.
"It's a new regime, new staff, they (Lions) weren't very good last year," Goff said. "It's a whole new thing, and I understand it, but just like every other team in this league, there's expectations.
"I don't know what the stat is, but every year there's new teams in the playoffs. Every year there are teams that were in the playoffs last year that aren't. Why not us? Why can't we be that one that wasn't in last year that is this year?
"Again, it starts one week at a time. Internally, our expectations are as high as anyone else."
WynnBET has the Lions sitting at -1200 odds to miss the postseason and just +600 to somehow make the field. For the record, nobody on the BetSided team expects the Lions to make the playoffs in our team-by-team betting previews.
The NFC North belongs to the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers, as they are -175 favorites to win the division again in 2021. Goff and the Lions could set their sights on a wild card berth, but they are by far the worst team in the NFC North, and arguably the worst team in all of football.
The Lions are second behind on the Houston Texans to be the team with the lowest win total this season at +350 odds, and unless Goff has a career renaissance in Detroit, it's hard to see this roster completely flipping the script in 2021.
The Lions, Goff and Dan Campbell are going to have to build this thing from the ground up. While it’s nice to have goals and expectations, Lions fans should take Goff’s words as nothing more than a pipe dream this season.
Will the Lions be the worst team in the NFL this season?
