Bill Belichick decided that Mac Jones gave the New England Patriots a better chance to win this season than Cam Newton on Tuesday, and oddsmakers seem to agree.

WynnBET had given the Patriots -105 odds to win over nine games this season when our BetSided team wrote its team preview for New Engladn, but those odds have shifted dramatically since Jones was named the starter. The Patriots are now favored to win over nine games at -150 odds, showing that Vegas thinks he is the better fit at quarterback for New England.

Jones has risen to second on the odds list to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award at +300 odds. He deserves all of the love after an ultra-impressive preseason, but there’s only so much you can take away from those games.

The Patriots are still third in the AFC East division odds, as they sit at +320.

Newton struggled last season with the Patriots, especially after he contracted COVID-19 ahead of Week 4, and the Patriots would rather play their first-round pick than take another year to see if Newton could still find his MVP form.

New England was one of the teams that was hit the hardest by COVID opt outs last season, but with Dont’a Hightower and other key contributors back in 2021, the Patriots are due to improve on last seasons’ 7-9 finish.

Belichick clearly found his guy when he took Jones in the first round, and all signs in Vegas point to him having a big rookie year and helping the Patriots compete for a playoff spot. Jones and the Patriots will take on his college teammate Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins in Week 1.
