Who in their right mind wants to watch NFL football on Thursday night when you can watch Marshall take on Appalachian State instead?

Diehard college football fans (and degenerate bettors like myself) will have the game on a second screen or will at least be checking in on the score throughout the night.

The Mountaineers have looked impressive through the first three weeks of the season, beating East Carolina and Elon handedly, and narrowly falling to Miami in Week 2. Marshall got off to a hot start against Navy and NC Central, but fell 42-38 to East Carolina in Week 3.

Both teams are contenders to win their respective conferences. Appalachian State is currently listed third on the odds list at WynnBET at +275 to win the Sun Belt Conference, and Marshall is listed with the second shortest odds at +300 to win the Conference USA.

Marshall vs. Appalachian State Prediction and Picks

With the spread right on the magic number of seven, I’m going to bet on the total instead and I’m going to take the over 58.5 at -110.

Marshall is averaging the second most yards per play (7.9) in the country through the first three weeks. Appalachian State is also having a strong offensive year, averaging 6.1 yards per play.

Those numbers also translate to points per play, as Marshall is ninth in the country in that statistic at 0.617 and Appalachian State is averaging 0.409. If both teams can keep that pace up in this matchup, the over 58.5 should hit with ease.

Finally, the last thing you want to see as an OVER bettor is the punter running on to the field. Well, Marshall only averages three punts per game and Appalachian State averages only 4.5.

We want offense in this Thursday night showdown! Give me the OVER 58.5.
