Michigan Getting No Love in March Madness Odds
By Joe Summers
Michigan barely squeaked into the NCAA Tournament, but has made the most of its opportunity, knocking off Colorado State and Tennessee to make the Sweet 16. The Wolverines have looked almost dominant in their victories, but aren't getting any respect from oddsmakers.
WynnBET Sportsbook currently has Michigan at +5000 to win the NCAA Tournament, dead last in the field next to St. Peter's.
But the Wolverines have won four of their last five games as underdogs and have one of the best players in the country in Hunter Dickinson. Can they continue their strong play and do they have any value to win the national championship?
The Case for Michigan
I wrote here why I like the Wolverines' chances to knock off Villanova, but the case is simple: the Wolverines score inside, defend the three-point line and avoid fouls. Dickinson has been fantastic in their first two tournament wins and there's not many defenders in the country who can contain him.
KenPom has Michigan with the 19th-best offense and the most difficult opposing offense strength of schedule in the country, so their defense is battle-tested against the best that college basketball has to offer. An Elite Eight matchup with the winner of Houston or Arizona would obviously be difficult, but the Wolverines are lucky to potentially catch one of those teams right after playing each other. That game will be a slugfest and whoever wins is going to be tired in the Elite Eight.
We know that Michigan's ceiling is high and they're capable of catching fire from deep. But it's their improving, tested defense and dominance inside that makes them a worthy value play moving forward. At +5000, you can do far worse than taking a shot on a team with big upset potential as we approach the Final Four.
