Miles Sanders and Kenneth Gainwell combined for just three carries in the Philadelphia Eagles’ loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football in Week 3.

It was a curious move by Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, as he seemed to throw out his intial game plan once the team fell behind and dialed up pass play after pass play for Jalen Hurts. While some of them were run-pass options, it’s concerning that the Eagles abandoned a running game that hasn’t been all that bad this season.

Sanders is averaging 5.2 yards per carry this year, but only on 10 rushes per game through the first three weeks. That has allowed Gainwell to emerge as a pass-catching threat behind Sanders, but the backfield looks to still be in the veteran’s control ahead of Week 4.

As for his usage in Week 3? Sanders explained that he can’t control how many carries he gets, but he did reveal an interesting nugget about the Eagles’ mindset after falling behind early.

“I didn’t dwell on it too much,” Sanders said. “It is what it is. I can only control what I can control. The game was pretty much out of hand early. So I can see how the game plan didn’t go as planned. There was kind of a panic from the whole team based on how the game went.”

Yikes.

I know Sirianni is a first-year head coach, but he’s going to have to involve Sanders more if the Eagles want to win games.

This week, Philly faces an even tougher test against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs can score a ton, but their defense has been horrible so far this season, allowing the second-most rushing yards in the league and third-most yards overall.

WynnBET has the Eagles as seven-point home underdogs in this one, and things could get out of hand quickly if Sirianni tries to do what he did last week and keep up with the Chiefs’ high-powered passing offense by throwing the ball every time again in Week 4.
