Now's the Time to Buy Low on the Spurs
By Peter Dewey
If the 2021-22 NBA season ended today, Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs would be the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference and in the play-in tournament for the second straight season.
San Antonio has come on strong as of late, winning six of its last 10 games to pull to 14-19 on the season.
ESPN’s Kirk Goldsberry shared how each team has done in terms of efficiency over the last 15 games, and the Spurs are one of the best teams in the NBA, ranking No. 2 in offensive efficiency and fifth in net efficiency.
Is it time we take the Spurs seriously? Dejounte Murray, Keldon Johnson and Derrick White are all taking a step this season, as Murray is one of the leading candidates at WynnBET Sportsbook to win the Most Improved Player award.
While the Spurs aren’t a buy-low candidate for the Western Conference or NBA Finals, they are a team that bettors may want to target to make the playoffs and to cover in games over the next few weeks.
Right now, San Antonio is 20-13 against the spread (covering at a 60.6 percent clip), which is the sixth best rate in the NBA. The Spurs are also 14-9 against the spread as an underdog this year, and they remind me a bit of the Cleveland Cavaliers being undervalued earlier this season.
Overall, the Spurs have been one of the more surprising teams in the NBA. They rank 10th in the NBA in offensive rating this season, 13th in defensive rating and 10th in net rating.
While San Antonio doesn’t have a superstar, it does have one of the greatest coaches of all time in Popvich who is clearly getting the most out of this young roster.
The Spurs are getting production out of some young players that have been better than previous years, but if they continue to grow into these roles, there’s a good chance that San Antonio finds itself in the play-in tournament in a top-heavy Western Conference.
