UPDATE: Stephon Gilmore reportedly was traded by the New England Patriots to the Carolina Panthers before for sixth-round pick before his release was finalized.

Carolina gets a replacement for the injured Jaycee Horn as it tries to keep up a fast start to the season. What follows in the original story of Gilmore's hypothetical odds to land on each team after his release was reported.

The New England Patriots shocked the NFL on Wednesday morning when they reportedly released All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore after unsuccessfully finding a trade partner for him.

Gilmore and the Patriots had been trending towards a breakup as the cornerback was in the final year of his contract and had been unable to agree to a new deal with the team. Gilmore is on the PUP list as he attempts to recover from a quad injury suffered last season, but he should still have a strong market as a free agent.

There aren’t odds for Gilmore’s next destination at WynnBET Sportsbook, but we’re going to set some hypothetical odds for his next team, which could help you get a jump start on the futures market. Or just in case you're interested in where he's most likely to sign next.

Stephon Gilmore Free Agent Destinations

Green Bay Packers

(Hypothetical) Odds to Sign Gilmore: +400

The Packers lost star cornerback Jaire Alexander to a shoulder injury in Week 4, and Gilmore would give the team some major insurance behind rookie Eric Stokes and veteran Kevin King.

Green Bay was torched by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoffs last season. Adding Gilmore with an eventually-healthy Alexander would give the Packers one of the best secondaries in the NFL. The Packers have a little over $7 million in cap space.

Kansas City Chiefs

(Hypothetical) Odds to Sign Gilmore: +450

It’s going to take some cap maneuvering for the Chiefs to bring in Gilmore, as FanSided’s National NFL Insider Matt Verderame pointed out, but there’s no doubt he would fit in Kansas City.

The Chiefs already brought in Josh Gordon to bolster their offense, but their defense has allowed the most yards per play (6.9) and the sixth-most passing yards in the NFL this season.

If Kansas City wants to maximize this team’s potential, finding a way to work Gilmore into its limited cap space is the best way. The Chiefs restructured a bunch of contracts this offseason to get Joe Thuney, Orlando Brown Jr. and Jarran Reed on the roster, so there’s hope that the front office can work that magic again.

Dallas Cowboys

(Hypothetical) Odds to Sign Gilmore: +500

This just makes too much sense after Dallas released Jaylon Smith on Tuesday night.

Dallas still has to pay Smith, so there isn’t extra cap room to work with, but pairing Gilmore with breakout star Trevon Diggs would cement Dallas as a heavy favorite in the NFC East. The Cowboys defense has improved this season, and Gilmore could help them make the next step.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

(Hypothetical) Odds to Sign Gilmore: +550

Schefter mentioned on ESPN this morning that the Bucs were an “unlikely” destination for Gilmore, but Josina Anderson and others have reported the Bucs as a potential suitor.

At this point, I think we should assume they are, even though they recently signed Richard Sherman. Jamel Dean, Sean Murphy-Bunting and Carlton Davis are all banged up for the Bucs, so Gilmore would be added insurance, and arguably the team’s best corner, if they could work out a deal.

The Bucs have slightly more cap space than the Chiefs, according to OverTheCap.com, but if anyone can convince Gilmore to take a paycut to win a ring, it’s probably Tom Brady.

Seattle Seahawks

(Hypothetical) Odds to Sign Gilmore: +800

Seattle has allowed the fifth-most passing yards in the NFL this season and can actually offer Gilmore the most money of this group, as it has over $11 million in cap space.

Still, if Gilmore’s intent is to win since he only will be able to play half a season, the 2-2 Seahawks in a tough NFC West are far from the most intriguing option.

Carolina Panthers

(Hypothetical) Odds to Sign Gilmore: +1200

The Panthers certainly could use a corner after rookie Jaycee Horn broke his foot in Week 3 against the Houston Texans.

Dak Prescott and the Cowboys picked apart Carolina’s defense in Week 4 after it had an impressive start to the 2021 campaign.

The Panthers run into the issue of not being able to sell Gilmore on a Super Bowl chance, even though they’re 3-1. They do have the second-most cap space in the NFL at over $19 million.

If Gilmore is looking for money and security, Carolina is a sleeper option.
