Top MLB Picks and Predictions Today (Keep Fading Yankees, Back Red Sox, White Sox as Favorites)
Sunday baseball on a long weekend? It's hard to find many things better than that, and there's plenty of matchups our team is bookmarking for wagers on Sept. 4.
Peter Dewey and Iain MacMillan are previewing every game on the MLB slate today, and here are a few of the top plays they're betting for Sunday.
Texas Rangers vs. Boston Red Sox Odds, Prediction and Pick
This is a no-brainer with Texas struggling mightily over the last week. The Rangers rank 20th in OPS and 26th in team ERA over the last seven days, while Boston is seventh and 22nd in those respective categories.
The Red Sox pitching staff is a concern, but we know they can hit, and Dunning has been extremely average in the 2022 season. He has a 4.24 Fielding Independent Pitching, and since he threw seven shutout innings against his former team, the Chicago White Sox, Dunning has struggled posting a 4.87 ERA over his last four starts.
To make matters worse, the Rangers are a dismal 8-17 in Dunning’s 25 starts this season, and they’ve won just one (!!) of his 12 road starts in 2022.
This is the ultimate fade of Texas, and one of the plays I like the most on Sunday.
New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays Odds, Prediction and Pick
The Yankees haven't just been in a slump, they've fallen off in a big way. Since Aug. 1, the Yankees rank 26th in the Majors in OPS at .633.
The unstoppable offense has all of a sudden lost its swagger. As a team, they have a batting average of .214 during the same time span. Only the Miami Marlins have had a worse batting average since the start of last month.
I have no interest in betting on a team as road favorites when their offense is this lethargic.
The story gets worse when you realize that Frank Montas gets the start for them today. New York traded for the pitcher at the deadline, in what was supposed to be the move that'd end up being the final piece for a World Series run.
Instead, Montas has sported a 7.01 ERA in his five starts since putting on the pinstripes.
Things are ugly in New York, and I'll bet on the abysmal play to continue today.
Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox Odds, Prediction and Pick
The Chicago White Sox offense has woken up at the right time.
Since the start of last month, the White Sox rank seventh in the Majors in OPS at .738. Meanwhile, the Twins have been so hot, ranking 20th in OPS during the same time span.
Lucas Giolito (5.27 ERA) will get the start for Chicago. He's had an up-and-down season, but in his only start against the Twins this season, he allowed just one run in four innings. If he can have a similar performance against Minnesota today, the White Sox will be in a great position to win.
Dylan Bundy (4.53 ERA) will start for the Twins. He allowed five hits and three earned runs in 5.1 innings in his last start against the White Sox.
I'll back the White Sox to complete the series sweep today.
