Trevor Lawrence Should Be Favorite in This Rookie Passing Prop in Week 1
Mac Jones won the starting job over Cam Newton in New England and has shot to the top of nearly every odds list for rookie quarterbacks. Jones is now the favorite among the three rookie quarterbacks starting in Week 1 to lead the group in passing yards. That shouldn’t be the case.
Jones has performed well in preseason and earned the starting job, but the favorite among the three should be Trevor Lawrence.
WynnBET has Jones odds set at +150 and Lawrence’s at +165. Although the difference is a small one, Lawrence should still have that respect going into the first game.
Jones and the Patriots are facing the Miami Dolphins. Miami wasn’t the stingiest pass defense last year, allowing the 11th-most passing yards per game. However, they were the most opportunistic. The Dolphins had the most interceptions last year with 17.
The Patriots are also going to rely on Damien Harris to keep their offense moving, leaving Jones to manage the game.
Lawrence, on the other hand, is in a pass-happy offense. The Jaguars led the league in passing play percentage (66.2%), which means nearly two-thirds of the time they called a pass. Jacksonville is also going up against the Houston Texans, who are projected to have the worst defense in the league (+20000 odds to allow the fewest points).
Over the preseason, Lawrence showed that he was able to make throws down the field accurately. Along with the fact the Jaguars are going to try and get the ball out of his hands quickly, he’ll have more opportunities for easy yards to tack onto his stat line.
The Jaguars have a better receiving corps and a more favorable matchup, which makes Jones being the favorite an interesting sight. Lawrence should be the favorite going into Week 1, and he will be my pick over Jones and Zach Wilson to lead the rookie class in passing yards.
