Trevor Lawrence Trusts the Jaguars But You Shouldn't

Trevor Lawrence was (and to some still is) considered one of the greatest quarterback prospects we’ve seen since Peyton Manning, but his NFL career has gotten off to a rocky start. 

Lawrence has thrown seven interceptions in his first three games, and the Jacksonville Jaguars are 0-3 on the season.

Life in the NFL sure comes at you fast. 

"I think I've gotten better at getting through all my progressions,” Lawrence said after the team’s Week 3 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. “I thought I did a pretty good job getting through my reads, not holding the ball too long. I thought I was more accurate. Those are the biggest things."

Now, this doesn’t mean that Lawrence is a bust. Remember, Manning led the NFL in interceptions with 28 in his rookie season. However, Manning played for two organizations in his career, the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos, who set him up in a position to succeed. 

At the moment, I don’t see that happening in Jacksonville, no matter what Lawrence does to improve. The Jaguars have missed the postseason in 13 of the last 14 seasons, and they've won just 64 games (64-139) dating back to the 2008 season. 

Jacksonville at its core has failed to build winning teams, and when it did in 2017, it was unable to sustain success, finishing in last place in the AFC South for the next three seasons. 

If Lawrence is truly a generational talent, and many pegged him to be just that entering the 2021 NFL Draft, there’s a good chance that the Jaguars waste him at least this season and most likely the first few years of his career. 

Let’s not forget that the Jaguars hired Urban Meyer, who has never coached at the NFL level, to take over a team with the No. 1 pick in the draft. Or that they drafted a running back in the first round, on a team that has so many needs, when an undrafted free agent running back ran for over 1,000 yards for them the season before. 

The Jaguars are a mess from top to bottom. They have been for over a decade. Trevor Lawrence can improve all he wants, and he thinks he is, but can the Jaguars surround him with a winning roster?

"I feel like every week I've gotten better," Lawrence said. "I definitely feel the progress. I feel like I'm seeing it really well. I feel good about where I am."

Lawrence has struggled mightily under pressure this season, and yet Meyer has put together an offensive game plan that has the Jaguars 29th in the league in rushing attempts. 

Lawrence and Zach Wilson have both struggled this season, but a lot of their struggles are a product of the subpar rosters around them. The Jags have shown they don’t know how to take advantage of talent over the past decade plus, and I don’t see that changing this season.
