Turn Your Backs On the San Francisco 49ers

It’s officially Trey Lance time in the Bay Area.

Lance took over for Jimmy G after Garappolo suffered a calf injury in the first half of the 49ers' loss to the Seahawks. Now, the No. 3 overall pick is finally in control of the team.

Lance had 198 total yards, two passing touchdowns and a 50% completion rate in the second half; his performance was similar to his preseason showings. He showed flashes of talent but is still a raw prospect. Nevertheless, good things are on the horizon for the San Francisco 49ers.

Just not this season.

WynnBET still has the 49ers’ win total set at 10.5, with the under (-135) favoring the over (+115). I’m completely in agreement with the odds, as this is the time to jump off the 49ers’ bandwagon.

At 2-2 and the Arizona Cardinals on the schedule, the 49ers’ would have to go 9-4 the rest of the way to surpass 10.5 wins -- that's not going to happen. Being in the toughest division in the league also doesn’t help the 49ers’ case.

Lance, like all the other rookie quarterbacks, is going to go through struggles this season. As a project, that is a normal expectation. However, San Francisco is in win-now mode and they don’t have time to wait for Lance to learn how to be accurate.

Unless Lance plays out of his mind during his time as the starter, San Francisco could be in for a repeat of last season.

Even when Garappolo returns, the offense isn’t guaranteed to morph into one of the best in the league. San Francisco had a “quarterback battle” during training camp, but now I’m not sure if either of them can lead the 49ers to to better side of 10.5 wins.
