The college football season is finally back with Week 0!

One of the more high profile matchups on the Week 0 slate is the late night showdown in Honolulu, Hawai'i between visiting Vanderbilt and the rebuilding Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors.

The Commodores are in year two of the Clark Lea era as they look to get out of the basement of the SEC, and it starts with taking advantage of first time head coach, Timmy Chang, and a Hawai'i team that is starting a rebuild after losing a ton of production to the transfer portal.

How should we bet this late night opener? Let's check out the odds:

Vanderbilt vs. Hawai'i Odds, Spread and Total

Spread:

  • Vanderbilt: -6.5 (-110)
  • Hawai'i: +6.5 (-110)

Moneyline:

Vanderbilt vs. Hawai'i Prediction and Pick

This may be a long year for Chang and the Rainbow Warriors. The former Hawai'i quarterback steps into the head coach role for the first time in his career after there was a near mutiny by the end of the season with Hawai'i. This season, they return four starters on offense and two on defense and face an SEC defense in Vanderbilt that has continuity in the trenches.

While the Commodores are outmatched against their SEC competition, they are still far superior to their rebuilding opponent. The team has three starters back on the offensive line and went to dual threat quarterback Mike Wright, who finished the season last year as the starter.

Whacky stuff happens on the island late at night, but I do expect Lea to have his team ready to go for this opener. There is not only a significant talent gap between the two teams, but also a continuity aspect that isn't being factored in enough both on the field and on the sidelines.

I think Vandy cruises in the opener and would bet them at -7 or better.

PICK: Vanderbilt -6.5
