Washington Commanders Will Struggle to Find Franchise Quarterback This Offseason
This offseason, two of the top quarterbacks on the market have already been taken off the board. Aaron Rodgers is going back to Green Bay and Russell Wilson is on his way to Denver. That leaves several teams still scratching their heads trying to figure out how to solve their quarterback issues.
One team that will stay scratching for a while is the Washington Commanders. In missing out on the top two targets, they continued their legacy of losing the big name quarterback sweepstakes.
Washington missed out on Peyton Manning a decade ago, and time has changed nothing. Good quarterbacks still don’t want to go to Washington – which leaves the franchise in a tough spot.
Outside of the draft, the only franchise-saving caliber quarterback left is Deshaun Watson – yet there much uncertainty about his future considering the sexual assault and harrassment cases he is facing.
Let’s take Watson out of the equation for right now.
WIthout him on the board, the only quarterbacks left are stop gaps. Jimmy Garapollo and Mitchell Trubisky are two of the names that come to mind, in terms of who will be available to Washington.
It will be especially difficult for Washington to land a big name quarterback, because its defense isn’t holding up its end of the bargain. The Commanders were supposed to have an elite defense last season, but ended with the 25th-ranked scoring defense.
Until the defense can step up and be a top 10 unit, Washington won’t be a place quarterbacks will want to go play. While the Rams followed the formula last season, it doesn’t work for every team.
Washington is +6000 to win the Super Bowl at WynnBET right now. With Taylor Heinicke at quarterback, don't expect those odds to get any shorter.
