We Could See a New Face in This Year's College Football Playoff

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of seeing the same schools in the College Football Playoff. Alabama, Oklahoma, Clemson, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and the occasional second SEC team. I’m tired of it. Give me some fresh teams to cheer for.

Thankfully, it looks like we may finally get a different team in the playoff this season, or at least there’s a chance.

After Clemson and Ohio State lost in the first two weeks of the season, the fourth spot is now open for someone else to claim. Alabama, Oklahoma, and Georgia will still likely be in it, but there are a handful of teams that could sneak into the fourth spot.

Here is a look at three teams that could be new to the College Football Playoff along with their odds via WynnBET to win the national championship.

No. 5 Iowa (+6000)

Iowa impressed in its first two games of the season by completely shutting down Indiana in a 34-6 victory in Week 1, and then followed it up by defeating Iowa State as an underdog, 27-17.

The Iowa defense has allowed only 26 points through the first two weeks, which means the Hawkeyes just might be able to challenge Ohio State in the Big 10.

If they want a chance at the Buckeyes, they’ll need to make the conference championship game. Standing in their way is No. 10 Penn State and No. 18 Wisconsin. If their defense is as good as they seem through the first two weeks, we might see Iowa in the College Football Playoff for the first time.

No. 8 Cincinnati (+10000)

I’m all in on the Bearcats this season. I want to see a non-power five team make the College Football Playoff, and if it’s ever going to happen, it’s going to be this year’s Cincinnati team. The Bearcats have Indiana this weekend and then Notre Dame in Week 5, and if they can put up impressive road wins in those two games, they may just have a strong enough resume to get the attention of the selection committee.

Desmond Ridder also has a chance to be the first player from a non-power five school to win the Heisman Trophy.

Who doesn’t want to win a Cinderella story? Let’s go Bearcats.

No. 10 Penn State (+4000)

Ohio State showing some weakness against Oregon in Week 2 means that the Big 10 East could be open for someone else to win the division. Penn State just might be that team.

The Nittany Lions defeated Wisconsin in the opening week, and then trounced the defending champions of the MAC, Ball State, in Week 2.

With a win over SEC Auburn in Week 3, they could prove to the country that they’re for real. A pivotal game in their season will occur in Week 6 against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Penn State would be the third school from the conference to make the playoff, after Ohio State and Michigan State.
