Wild Wagering Trends for NFL Week 9: Don't Bet against Rams, Sean McVay After a Loss
By Ben Heisler
In last week's "Wild Wagering Trends," our Iain MacMillan pointed out three unique trends for the slate of NFL games, and two of them hit blind!
The Steelers and Browns went under 42.5 with a 15-10 road win for Pittsburgh, moving that record to 22-8-1 in the Steelers' last 30 road games. Meanwhile, the Patriots continued their dominance against the spread over the Chargers; moving to 13-4 ATS all-time with an impressive road victory.
How will this week's set of remarkable NFL betting trends shake out? Let's dive in with all odds courtesy of WynnBET Sportsbook.
Ravens are 9-4 ATS After a Bye Under John Harbaugh
Baltimore -6 at home to Minnesota is one of my favorite bets of the week because of Lamar Jackson's propensity to beat bad teams in dominant fashion. You can debate whether the Vikings are truly "bad" or not, but when you can't take care of Cooper Rush and the Dallas Cowboys in prime time in your home stadium, sometimes the narrative writes itself.
Harbaugh should run circles around Mike Zimmer, who was actively roasted in real-time by #FootballTwitter for his decision making, play calling and clock management issues.
Unders are 7-0-1 in the Last 8 Giants' Home Games
I was impressed by the Giants' performance last week on the road at Kansas City on Monday Night Football. While they didn't exactly move the ball against a putrid Chiefs defense, they were largely in control with a shot to win late, forced turnovers, and finished the game with a 3-point loss after closing as 10.5-point road dogs.
This week, they host the Las Vegas Raiders, who just released Henry Ruggs following his fatal car accident that killed a 23-year old woman and her dog. Las Vegas sits atop the AFC West division with a 5-2 record with a top 10 offense, but the total is sitting at 46 at WynnBET for a reason. West coast teams headed east for an early start time tend to be strong fades traditionally, but I don't see a situation where the Raiders light up the scoreboard this week.
Rams Under Sean McVay are 13-3 ATS After Losing Against the Spread
The line of Rams -7.5 feels a bit strong, but that was also a very likely outcome after opening at -6, followed by the announcement that Derrick Henry would likely miss the rest of the season.
Even still, McVay always seems to hit the right notes with his players following a loss. They've had a multiple losing streak just four times total in his coaching career, and more importantly, cover the spread at an astonishing 81% clip.
My first lean was initially towards Tennessee +7.5, especially with the hook. Derrick Henry has done little the last two games despite wins vs. the Chiefs and Titans, so if anything, the move is a major overreaction. However, the mere presence of Henry is substantial because the Rams would at least have to account for him. No threat means no concern at all, giving the Rams a fair leg up, even trying to make up for a touchdown-plus.
