British Open Championship Matchup Bets (Target Thomas, Rahm, and Hatton to Victory)
By Joe Summers
Nailing an outright winner at a major tournament like the British Open Championship is always fun, but matchup plays are our bread and butter.
With the 150th Open Championship kicking off in less than 24 hours, we've been busy all week at BetSided bringing you power rankings, best bets, a weather report, dark horse picks and more.
Now, it's time to dive into matchups. Using the odds from WynnBET Sportsbook, here are my favorite matchup bets for The Open:
British Open Championship Matchup Bets
Justin Thomas (-115) vs Shane Lowry
I'm bullish on Thomas' chances as he's my pick to win the 2022 British Open Championship. After finishing T13 at the Masters, he won the PGA Championship with an incredible comeback in the final round and has three top-five finishes in his last six events.
There are simply no holes to Thomas' game. He's third in Strokes Gained: Total, fourth in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, and sixth in Strokes Gained: Approach. As a bonus, he's stellar with the driver, excels in the wind and leads the Tour in Par 4 Performance.
Lowry has actually won this event before and is a strong player, but he's not in the same tier as Thomas. He's finished outside the top 20 in three of his last four events, struggling with his driver and wedges relative to the other top players in the field.
In my opinion, Thomas should be a solid favorite. To get him at -115 gives us value I can't pass up on.
Jon Rahm (-155) vs Jordan Spieth
This is a lot of juice to pay, but I make Rahm one of the top contenders while I don't see Spieth in the same category. Rahm has a top-15 finish in each of the last two British Open Championships with three top-12 finishes in his last five tournaments.
He leads the Tour in Strokes Gained: Off-The-Tee and ranks sixth in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, so he's a great fit for St. Andrews.
While Spieth loves playing here and usually does well, I can't trust his recent form compared to Rahm's. Spieth finished outside the top 30 at both the U.S. Open and PGA Championship while missing the cut at The Masters. His errant driver and poor putting have been huge weaknesses, so Rahm's steady play gives him an edge.
Tyrrell Hatton (+100) vs Dustin Johnson
I'm looking to fade LIV Tour golfers and Hatton gives us a chance to do so.
While his recent form isn't stellar, Hatton is strong around-the-green and an exceptional putter. Both qualities are important at The Open and Dustin Johnson has been horrible at both this season.
Hatton is a significantly better bunker player as well. Combined with his sensational three-point avoidance statistics, Hatton will prevent disastrous holes while Johnson could see his score blowup with just a few poor shots.
At plus money, I'll fade the LIV Tour player in poor form over the PGA Tour player who fits the course well.
