Fresh off an NFC East division title, Ron Rivera and the Washington Football Team will host reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 at 1:00 p.m. EST.

Washington has a new quarterback in 2021, as veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick replaces the Dwayne Haskins-Alex Smith-Taylor Heinicke combination from last season. Fitzmagic was solid in seven starts and a few relief appearances for the Miami Dolphins in 2020, and he should help Washington’s offense that was in the bottom three in the NFL in points scored a season ago.

Herbert, who is +1000 to win the MVP (third) this season at WynnBET, and new head coach Brandon Staley are hoping to solidify themselves as a playoff team in the AFC.

The Chargers boast a strong skill group with a defense that finished in the top 10 in yards allowed last season. Washington’s elite pass rush of Chase Young, Montez Sweat, and Jonathan Allen should be a lot for Herbert to handle in Week 1, but the Chargers are actually a road favorite in this one.

Here’s how the odds look for this Week 1 tilt:

Chargers vs. Washington Spread, Odds and Over/Under

Spread:

Chargers -1.0: -105

WFT +1.0: -115

Moneyline:

Washington vs. Chargers Betting Trends

  • The Chargers were 9-7 against the spread last season.
  • Washington was 5-2 as a home underdog against the spread, but just 2-5 straight up in those games.
  • The Chargers were 5-4 as a favorite last season and 2-1 as a road favorite.

Chargers vs. Washington Prediction and Pick

This game is a legitimate toss up, as both of these teams are expected to be borderline playoff contenders this season.

Do you take a home underdog in Washington? Or do you roll with potential breakout star Justin Herbert to build on an impressive rookie season.

I say neither, and take the under.

I know, I know, there’s no fun in that. However, Los Angeles and Washington both were top-10 defenses a season ago in terms of yardage allowed.

Fitzpatrick certainly is an upgrade to Washington’s offense after it finished with the third-fewest points in 2020, but with Derwin James back I really think the Chargers defense is one of the better units in the AFC.

I’ll take the under in this game cause I can’t pick a winner, but it should be an exciting matchup to watch.
