Tyrod Taylor is in as the Houston Texans starting quarterback in Week 1, and BetSided’s Ben Heisler broke down why that’s good news for bettors

Taylor isn’t the worst option to replace Deshaun Watson, but he’s a serious downgrade. Watson is dealing with serious sexual assault allegations, and it’s hard to see him playing football until there is some sort of resolution.

The Jacksonville Jaguars begin the Trevor Lawrence-Urban Meyer era on the road in Week 1, but Lawrence’s strong Week 3 preseason performance is a positive sign for the Jags going forward.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is going to face a lot of adversity on a subpar Jaguars team, but he could change their fortune with a strong rookie season. Jacksonville is a road favorite against Houston, who is expected to be one of the league’s worst teams in 2021.

Here’s how the odds stack up at WynnBET Sportsbook:

Jaguars vs. Texans Spread, Odds and Over/Under

Spread:

Jaguars -3.0: -105

Texans +3.0: -115

Moneyline:

Jaguars: -150

Texans: +130

Over/Under: 44.5 (Over: -110/Under: -110)

Texans vs. Jaguars Betting Trends

  • Tyrod Taylor is 26-18-3 against the spread as a starter in his career.
  • Houston was 6-10 against the spread last season.
  • Jacksonville was 7-9 against the spread last season despite going 1-15.
  • The Texans have won the last six matchups against the Jaguars dating back to 2018.
  • Jacksonville is just 2-12 against the Texans since 2014, with both wins coming in the 2017 season.

Jaguars vs. Texans Prediction and Pick

I know that Taylor has been solid as a starter against the spread in his career, but those wins came on much more talented Buffalo Bills teams than the one he has in Houston.

The Texans have torn down their roster, partly because of Watson's legal issues and trade request, but it’s not a team that can support Taylor to just simply be a game manager.

Lawrence doesn't have much help either, but I’m more comfortable picking a winner in this one than trying to figure out the total with two unknown offenses facing off.

Give me the Jaguars on the moneyline at -150 to get the win in Lawrence’s debut. I’ll stay away from the spread out of respect for Taylor, but I think Jacksonville picks up a road win and starts the season 1-0 just like it did in 2020.
